Village of 100 people

Something to ponder:

This illustration comes from Dr Philip Harter of Stanford University’s School of Medicine which is now widely quoted:

If we could shrink the earth’s population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like the following:

There would be:

- 57 Asians, 21 Europeans

- 14 from the Western Hemisphere, both north and south;

- 8 would be Africans;

- 52 would be female, 48 male;

- 30 would be white, 70 would be non-white;

- 70 would be non-Christian, 30 Christian;

- 89 would be heterosexual, 11 homosexual;

- 6 people would possess 59 per cent of the entire world’s wealth and all six would be from the USA;

- 80 would live in substandard housing;

- 70 would be unable to read, 50 would suffer from malnutrition;

- one would be near death, one would be near birth;

- one (yes, only one) would have a college education; and

- one (yes, only one) would own a computer.

Now if this is the world now, what can we do to make it different? And we talk about the Jews and the Muslims and what have you's. Is it all really that important? God gave us brilliant minds but most of us do not make full use of it. If we are to see the human race evolve into higher beings, we need to evolve our minds first.

Christmas Wish

John Lennon was a genius during his time. That was many years ago. He had a beautiful vision. A vision any normal human being would have had. And he dared to preach it.

Let's all make a stand. For peace.

Imagine....http://www.merseyworld.com/imagine/lyrics/imagine.htm

I've seen it with my own eyes. People suffering from war, fear in the eyes of mothers and children, emptiness in their hearts, a deep longing for it to end. To all of us who have been touched by their suffering, I urge you to spread peace.

A letter from a fan

Most of you know I have my own website at http://jiminlai.fotopic.net. And sometimes I would get letters from people saying how much they admire my work.

I recently received this letter which I must say is the biggest honour I have ever received in my entire photojournalsim career.
To the person who sent me this, I thank you very very much. I hope to thank you in person one day. I am humbled...

Subject:	just to say hi

hey jimin,
hope you're doing well. .kind of stumbled upon your site from browsing
through local photography sites, and saw your name referred in quite a few
different sites so i thought i'd better check it out. expectations riding
high, i was starting to get worried of being disappointed. BUT, you not only
blasted me away with how good your pictures are, the richness of the colours,
the wide display of different ranges of techniques that you so comfortably
employ, the so various settings that you seem to be able to get yourself
into, but also more importantly, how intricately you prepare the story
behind the picture, i feel as if you can make your audience or viewers see
the story just by looking at the pictures. you know how like in primary
school we get a series of pictures to compose an essay of sorts, you just do
that in 1 picture, and i feel as if i can write your essay to an infinite
word length. it's a gift you have that not many people have i must say
judging from viewing all the other sites that i have come across over time
(dont get me wrong there are those who do have good eyes when i comes to
photography) but you seem to have taken the extra thing in you that makes
your photos so impactful. i have just started out in photography, enjoying
it immensely, and the occasional praises that i get from people who see my
work, i can only tell them that there are sooo many more others out there
who are the pros, and your name would definitely be on the tips of my lips
from now onwards. then again you must have gotten heaps of accolades in the
past, so just thought i'd drop mine in as well. a collection this good,
deserves some praise no matter how many have already been heaped.
all the respect, from one malaysian to another. and keep up the great work.

End of amnesty for illegal immigrants

Followed the immigration officials on an operasi. It has been a long time since I had a midnight adventure like that. I brought a fellow photographer along, Choen. I think he was a little shaken by the whole cowboy style experience during the assignment. I always told people that shooting was only 10 percent of my job. The other 90 percent is doing everything else to make sure I get the picture. And last night it wasn't easy to follow those RELA trucks and immigration fellows. They didn't wait up for the press and disregarded traffic lights. Thank god I managed to keep up. We walked in the darkness after that and had to cross muddy patches on the dirt track. Really, cowboy style but fun.

Home sweet home

If you live in PJ, this should be a familiar sight to you. I think I will start a project documenting our own favourite SS2 area. Who knows, 10 years from now, all this will be obsolete. I think it's about time someone photographed our local suburban scenes before it becomes just a memory.
We live here because we love it here. And we love the way it feels here. Because it is home.

Cheers, Jimin.
